god i love this “Telling women to build the life they want–and to stop believing they have to be beautiful and chosen first–is truly radical.” loving ourselves wholly for who we are, and what we have to offer, is the most radical thing a woman can do. to be free, and find comfort in herself, without male validation, is indeed radical. it’s pure. it’s freedom. something men try and try to take from us, but have failed since the beginning of time
what scares me the most is how irrevocable dismantling this ideology of beauty and male validation is. I feel like it’s been deeply conditioned into women that even though I am against and actively try to not conform to beauty standards that are male centered, I end up falling back into that trap without even realising it. I find it inescapable especially in a digitalised and capitalist society.
‘By robbing women of even the desire to want something more than beauty and male validation, we’re kept perpetually in its throes.’
This line reminded of the Margaret Atwood quote about male fantasies.
Even if I actively try to make choices against it, the fact that because of how the world works and how women are raised, it worries me a lot if subconsciously we’ll ever really get to escape these shackles that the patriarchal system has put us in.
Also this was my first time coming across the concept of a subliminal and while I do believe there’s some neurological truth and support behind the concept of manifestation which yields desirable results but I have to say, believing that listening to a subliminal will automatically change certain aspects of your appearance and give you doe eyes or a button nose or the most lethal face-card, thats some penthouse level of delusion stuff.
i felt this in my soul. i used to listen to subliminals all the time, trying to manifest my dream body. i rarely tried getting something other than a sp or appearance…
Sad but true. Great essay! Let’s hope enough women are waking up to the truth that having a hot body is not the path to happiness. Why would anyone choose to be a sex object when you can choose to be a real person instead?
So trueee. Sometimes I find myself in the position where all I could think about is love. To combat that, I try to expand it. Try to form community instead of relying on one man. Striving towarda that is mire useful. I hope this helps some women.
Oh this is amazing. Ive never been into manifestation honestly but the message remains the same. This really made me question what my values are. Even if you’re a religious or spiritual person who believes in prayer if all what you mostly pray about is to get a man or be hot that’s worth thinking about too. Thank you!

This is taking back our power and liberating us from the ideas that historically have always been placed on us women.
